When temperatures rise, we crave lighter and fresher fragrances that revitalise the senses and reduce the sensation of heat, and scents that envelop us with sensations typical of summer days, oceanic, exotic and travellers. If you want to fully enjoy your fragrance this season, pay attention to the tips we share to perfume yourself in summer.
"In summer, high temperatures accelerate the evaporation of fragrances. Deep perfumes with intense, dark woody, resinous or spicy accords can become overpowering in hot weather, so the natural inclination is to prefer fresh fragrances," explains Julien Pruvost, creative director of Trudon.
Can perfumes cause skin blemishes?
Good quality perfumes do not usually cause stains on the skin, although if you are going to be exposed to the sun for many hours, it is preferable to perfume your clothes, always taking care not to do so on silk or linen fabrics (you can perfume the lining of the garments), or apply a hair or body mist.
Always buy perfumes in authorised establishments that guarantee that the fragrance is original, as their formula has been developed to avoid photosensitisation (as well as complying with all health requirements and current regulations). When we use a fake perfume, we cannot know what is in the formula and we are exposed not only to the appearance of stains on the skin, but also to allergic reactions.
Does heat deteriorate perfume?
The alcohol in the fragrance acts as a natural preservative. To ensure that the perfume's composition is not altered, it is advisable to store it away from sunlight and at room temperature.
Under the sun
If you are going to enjoy a few days' holiday at the beach, you will notice that the perfume has a stronger hold. This is due to the humidity of the environment that keeps the skin more hydrated, which helps the perfume last longer.
If you want to feel your fragrance while you enjoy the sun and sea or the pool, you can spray it on a scarf you use to cover your head or on your towel.
If you sweat a lot…
"Heat causes perspiration, which can interact with the fragrance. Perfumes designed specifically for summer have simpler formulas, as well as more volatile raw materials, so they tend to be more compatible with perspiration and don't alter as much with sweat," says Pruvost.
To make perfume last longer in summer or in hot, dry climates, apply a moisturising cream or lotion to the skin beforehand.
How to make fragrance last longer in summer?
If you are spending the summer in the city or in a dry climate, your fragrance will evaporate faster. You can make your perfume last longer by applying a moisturising cream or lotion to the skin beforehand, and if it is from the same line as your perfume, all the better, because you will prolong its scent more envelopingly.
You can also use a body mist from the same line as your perfume to reapply generously throughout the day and prolong its scent.
Reapply
Perfume evaporation in summer, especially if you use fresh fragrances and eau de toilette, is faster. Carry a spray bottle with you to reapply perfume as often as you like.
What do you need to look out for to find the ideal summer fragrance?
When choosing a perfume, pay attention to the sensations of well-being and fullness that its olfactory composition gives you.
Julien Pruvost argues that perfumes with citrus, aquatic or green notes give a feeling of freshness. This does not literally mean that they refresh us, but our brain links these notes to the natural smell of these raw materials: sea, vegetation, fruit trees…
Another thing to bear in mind: even if the composition is not technically fresh, if the blend is harmonious and balanced, it will produce a pleasant sensation. As the heat saturates our pituitary gland in summer, we are generally less attracted to intense fragrances.
