Quite simply, mint is the essence of freshness. Cool, breezy and ever-so-refreshing. Mint mingles in eau de colognes and men’s fragrances for a pop of peppery energy. Endlessly green.
There are many varieties of mint from different parts of the world that are all used in perfumery. Menthe Arvensis, or field mint, comes from China and Brazil, Peppermint comes from the United States, Russia and France, while Spearmint or green mint comes from the United States and China, and Pennyroyal comes from Morocco and Spain. The essence is made from the steam distillation of fresh flowers or partially dried flowers which are picked just before blossoming.
Mint is named after the nymph Mintha, the object of Hades' love and the object of Persephone's jealousy which transformed her into a plant. The Ancient Greeks believed that mint was a sexual stimulant and prohibited soldiers from using it. Similarly, mint was known in Arabic cultures as the plant of harems.
