Fresh Cut Grass

Very green and powerful scent, sap, freshly mown lawn

A powerfully fresh scent, the synthetic note of cut grass is as crisp, warm and inviting as a breezy summer’s day. This intoxicatingly green scent is equally popular in both men’s and women’s fragrances for its ability to add a touch of green to floral bouquets and refresh woody accords.

Production

The cut grass note reproduces the deep, green scent of freshly cut wet grass. As it is not possible to extract essential oil from grass directly, the note is reproduced synthetically. Typically, the molecule cis-3-hexenol is used for its powerfully green, sap-like qualities.

History

Cis-3-hexenol, otherwise known as “leaf alcohol”, is naturally present in many plants and fruit. The deeply fragrant molecule was first discovered in 1959, and is used today to add a green character to fragrances. In small doses, this substance can enliven accords, adding an enticingly fresh quality.
