Calone (Marine)

Oceanic, fresh, vegetal, powerful, watery, clean, with oyster's hint.

Likened to the clean, crispness of a cool sea breeze, Calone is a popular ingredient used in oceanic fragrances and is often noted for its uniquely floral undertones. Sometimes referred to as “watermelon ketone”, perfumers have detected sweet notes reminiscent of watermelon. Calone is typically balanced in small quantities and adds a slight oceanic or aquatic note to complex accords. In higher doses, it gives a marine, oyster-like nuance. This versatile ingredient is popular in both men’s and women’s fragrances.

History

Setting the tone for oceanic fragrances to come, Calone was the first of its kind—a unique product in the history of perfumery with its fresh, clean and breeze-like nuances. Calone first entered the scene with the launch of New West by Aramis—a complex accord boasting fresh, salty top notes and warm base notes of cedar, musk and amber—in the late 80s. However, the scent really made its debut in the mid-90s with the success of floral oceanic fragrances such as Escape by Calvin Klein.
