Blackberry

Tangy, sweet, fruity, sharp, juicy notes.

A fragrance house with a skilled nose can manipulate the many stages of a blackberry’s ripeness and reflect its ever-so-sweet nuances in a carefully crafted accord. Blackberries evoke a tangy-sweet effect: delicately wavering between lusciously sweet and surprisingly sour. Notes of blackberry are particularly popular balanced with other fruity notes, or when used in combination with florals.

Production

Between the thorny brambles of blackberry bushes grows this sweetly tangy fruit. Native to temperate, northern regions, blackberries are particularly abundant across North America and Europe. Essential oil cannot be extracted from the blackberry; the note is synthetically reproduced in the laboratory using other raw materials.

History

History surrounding the delectable blackberry is steeped in myth and intrigue. Tales of English folklore would have us believe that passing under an archway of bramble branches could cure all manner of afflictions. The Celts, on the other hand, believed blackberries were sacred to fairies (among other mythical creatures). According to Christianity, the crown of thorns worn by Jesus was made from brambles—thus turning the berries from red to black.
