Woody Perfumes

The world of fragrances is infinite, and so are the possibilities of mixing and composing through olfactory families and notes.

The world of fragrances is infinite, and so are the possibilities of mixing and composing through olfactory families and notes.

However, there are a series of families that are the common thread to understand what we like or what we feel like wearing at any given time. We have already talked on other occasions about the 7 olfactory families and its 15 subfamilies which leads us to talk about some of the most desired perfumes: the woody ones.

These are fragrances with notes reminiscent of a forest, earth, and trees: wood, roots, resins, moss, leaves and herbs. Woody notes tend to be rich and warm, and often form the base of a perfume due to their low volatility.

Woody fragrances first appeared in the 1940s and, due to their potency, were initially considered masculine fragrances. Fortunately, in 1952, French designer Serge Lutens created the first woody fragrance for women, Féminité du bois, a classic scent that marked a turning point in the history of perfumery.

Today, woody perfumes are on trend and gender barriers have completely disappeared.

**Sandalwood **

Has a balsamic and sweet fragrance, widely used for its versatility and its ability to combine with a wide variety of notes. It is creamy and sensual, so it is often associated with oriental fragrances. Its aroma has a unique depth and ability to linger and act as an excellent fixative for other notes.

**Cedarwood**

Is dry and explosive, its aroma gives any composition fixation and character. Cedarwood is surely the most significant of the woods due to its ancient use in perfumery, and still one of the most used notes in the present. It is used as a base note, supporting, and combining with fresher ones such as citrus. Its aroma is comforting, warm and long lasting, ideal for evening fragrances and cold days.

**Vetiver**

Has a rich, earthy, smoky aroma. It is impossible to reproduce it synthetically and comes from the oil extracted from the roots that grow in marshy areas near rivers. It combines a fresh fragrance resulting from its earthy and humid origins, but at the same time it is exquisite and sweet.
