Production

Melon is an annual herbaceous plant with long vine-like stems and is part of the cucurbitaceous family which means it's related to squash, pumpkins and even cucumber. With a diverse range of geographic origins, it's no wonder there are so many varieties, including Charentais, cantaloupe and galia. Like with many other juicy fruits, it is impossible to obtain an essential oil through extraction, but rather is reproduced with laboratory techniques like headspace.

History

The thickly skinned melon has a long history with origins in India and African deserts, and was grown in Egypt as early as 500 B.C., when it was a small fruit and not very sweet. Greeks and Romans were quite fond of melon and ate it served with salt and pepper. It wasn't until the 15th century that it evolved into the large, sweet fruit that we know today. The cantaloupe variety was brought to Europe from Armenia by Italian monks who were growing it in their Cantaluppo property. It arrived shortly thereafter in the south-east region of France.
