Massoia

Woody-amber, delicately milky, coconut notes.

Deliciously milky, massoia has a unique scent that can be likened to creamy coconut. When blended with benzoin, vanilla and tobacco, massoia has a distinguishing coconut-caramel scent that acts as an ideal base note. This decadent note gives a fullness and warmth to fragrance compositions—complimenting accords with a woody-amber effect.

Production

Massoia wood comes from a tree in the laurel family, native to New Guinea, with the majority of it being produced in Indonesia. It grows in tropical forests with an altitude of 100 to 1000 m. The tree bark is valued for its fragrant properties. To obtain its essence, the wood is cut at the base and left to dry in open air before being steam distilled. Since the production process requires the trees to be killed, the scent is now produced synthetically. 70% of its composition is lactone which is taken from flowers like the tuberose.
