Production

Marjoram is a perennial plant that grows native to Western Asia and North Africa, with Egypt being the predominant producer. It grows up to 60 cm tall and can also grow in France, Italy, Morocco, Tunisia and Spain. Sweet marjoram essence is obtained by steam distilling the fresh plant.

History

Marjoram has its place in ancient Greek mythology, as its fragrance is said to have been created by Aphrodite and symbolizes joy. In the Middle Ages, women put the flowers in fragrant bouquets, in their handbags and bath water. Marjoram leaves were even rubbed on oak furniture and hardwood floors to achieve a fragrant shine.
