Sandalwood, grown in India where its cultivation is subject to very strict laws that are enforced by the state, is not only used for fragrance but also for pieces of furniture in which ceremonial robes and brides' trousseaus are placed and from which they absorb the wood's exotic perfume. It is one of the most important trees in the Buddhist paradise where, it is said, it was used to build the carriage of the Sun.
