Production

The intoxicating scent of rum is produced through sugarcane distillation. After fermentation, rum is crushed and distilled before being aged. In perfumery, a further process of extraction is undertaken to obtain a scent that’s perfectly shaped to the perfumer’s liking.

History

The history of rum is closely tied to the history of colonialism, trade, and the world’s obsession with sugar. As a byproduct of sugarcane, rum was introduced to the world for the first time in the 17th century once it was discovered that molasses, a byproduct of the sugar refining process, could be fermented into alcohol. Rum was an instant hit, and its popularity spread quickly. The global trading routes that sailed the supplies were well-established to meet this newfound demand—meaning rum ended up in the hands of sailors and pirates alike.
